Clinical Survey of Thyroid Disease. in the, Honam district and investigation of nursing problems in the course of diagnosis and treatment of Thyroid disease with- r-adiosotope

Abstract
848 patients with diseases of the thyroid gland were surveyed through clinical- observation and investigated about nursing problems in the course of diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease with 1131 (I^(131) radioisotope) at the radioisotope clinic of Cheonnam National University Hospital for the last 9 years from Jan. 1962 to Dec. 1970.
Results are as follows:
1. The ratio between male and female is 1:5,5.
2. Age distribution shows¢¥ that the number of female patients are highest in the third decade and lowest in the sixth decade, but the highest incidence of males is in the fourth decade and-.lowest in the sixth decade.
3. The distance between patient and nurse and the duration of treatment are¢¥ very important points during the exposure to I^(131) Radioisotope. This should be kept in mind to avoid contamination especially by RI-I^(131) contaminated urine.
4. The maximum external exposure amount in the course of treatment and diagnosis of thyroid disease with radioisotope is less than one fourth (1/4) of the recommended amount by ICRP.
5. Serial hematologic examinations were checked up every three months. and the results were within normal limits.
6. We have reviewed six points to be kept in mind by a nurse while handling radioisotope.
